Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (transl. Labyrinth 3) is an upcoming 2024 Indian Hindi-language horror-comedy film written and directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banner of T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios. This film marks the third instalment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise, following the 2022 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. Principal photography of the film is complete. While Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) were set in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, respectively, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is set in Kolkata, West Bengal. This shift in setting promises to bring a fresh cultural and visual flavour to the series.

The story is set in Kolkata, West Bengal, where Rooh Baba visits a haunted mansion to uncover the truth behind the spirit of Manjulika. This premise sets the stage for a blend of horror and comedy, typical of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa series.

Development and Teaser

The third instalment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise was officially announced on 1 March 2023, through a teaser released by T-Series. This teaser marked the collaboration of producer Bhushan Kumar, director Anees Bazmee, and actor Kartik Aaryan once again, with Aaryan returning in the lead role as Rooh Baba. Anees Bazmee returns as both the director and writer for the film.

Casting Highlights

Kartik Aaryan leads the cast, reaffirming his pivotal role as Rooh Baba. On 12 February 2024, he announced that Vidya Balan, who famously portrayed Monjulika in Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), would be returning to reprise her iconic character. This announcement was made through a collaboration video of them dancing to “Mere Dholna” sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh. On 21 February 2024, Triptii Dimri joined the project, adding to the excitement of the sequel. Rajpal Yadav, known for his role as Chhote Pandit in the previous films, will also return. The cast also features Madhuri Dixit, Vijay Raaz, Rajesh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa, Sanjay Mishra, and Ashwini Kalsekar.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3: Filming Journey

The filming journey of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 began on March 9, 2024, in Mumbai, with an inaugural muhurat puja ceremony. Producer Bhushan Kumar clapped the muhurat shot for actor Kartik Aaryan, officially kicking off the filming process. Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimri, Rajesh Sharma, and co-producer Shiv Chanana were also present at the ceremony. A glimpse video of this ceremony was shared by T-Series on March 11, 2024, titled “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 Begins”.

During the shoot, director Anees Bazmee faced significant challenges, including a fractured leg on the last day of the film recce. Despite this, Bazmee continued to work, ensuring the movie stayed on track for a Diwali 2024 release. The production involved extensive planning and coordination, with key members Bhushan Kumar, Anees Bazmee, and Kartik Aaryan actively engaged in discussions and preparations.

Filming Locations and Schedules

The filming began in Mumbai and included a major song and dance sequence featuring Kartik Aaryan. After a short break, the team scouted locations in Kolkata, where significant scenes were filmed, including a bullet ride on Howrah Bridge and sequences at Victoria Memorial, Mallick Ghat flower market, and Park Street Graveyard. The team then resumed filming in Mumbai and later in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, capturing key scenes at historic landmarks such as Orchha Fort and Ram Raja Mandir.

Challenges and Triumphs

The production faced various challenges, including Bazmee’s injury and the tight schedule to meet the Diwali 2024 release. However, the dedication of the cast and crew ensured the principal photography was wrapped up successfully by August 1, 2024.

Release

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 1 November 2024, coinciding with the Diwali festive period. This highly anticipated film promises to deliver the perfect blend of horror and comedy, continuing the legacy of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise.
